Midlands Kickboxing Turkish training camp was an outstanding success.

Whilst on annual leave In Turkey, James Turner and Jenny Enderby from Midlands Kickboxing were approached by local fighter Rocky Yilmaz after seeing James is his club vest. Both James and Jenny accepted Rocky’s SOS call. We had just over a week to prepare for the fight against Eser Ayaz the reigning Mugla regional champion. Rocky’s coach had to return to his family home else-where in Turkey which left Rocky to fend for himself. We quickly had to assess his good and bad points. His ability to work in 100 degree heat was tremendous his fitness levels were very good. Since his old coach left Rocky concentrated on the work he could carry out himself and really enjoyed running huge distances daily. It was quickly apparent to Both James and Jenny that their fighter had a big heart great engine and plenty of good intentions but his hands were not great. We set about correcting that, we worked really hard on his hand speed and did lots of sparing. Both James and Jenny got into the ring and really pushed him at first he struggled to understand the slips and parry’s and the footwork as he has no Martial Arts experience, however we kept chipping away and at the end of the week he looked very sharp. The evening of the fight our camp was relaxed, I knew nothing about Eser and the language barrier didn’t help. As we arrived at the outdoor venue close to the mayor’s official office, I had simply under estimated quite how big this fight was. There were hundreds of fanatical supporters there all standing around the ring, it was an extremely volatile atmosphere. Win loose or drew I knew that Rocky was in a better place to challenge than he was several days before. We had a game plan to push him really had the first round, so that I could quickly analyze his opponent and then advise him and modify or plan for the next round. The bell rang and the fight set off at a frantic pace both fighters gave their all, then Rocky produced a moment of magic and pulled off one of the routines we worked on, he slipped the jab, hooked low the body then hooked to the head the finished him with the cross the fight was over in a blink of an eye and Rocky was crowed the Mugla Regional Champion to which he dedicated his win to Midlands Kickboxing.

3 is the Magic Number

On the 29th of July the Instructor and Coaches from Midlands Kickboxing travelled to the famous Temple Martial Arts Centre in Birmingham to take part in a specially arranged Black belt grading. All three students were really put through their paces during the three and a half hour grading, only briefly pausing for drink breaks. The grading consisted of freestyle Kickboxing, freestyle pad work, power techniques, technical grading sets and a tough series of shadow boxing giving the opportunity to showcase what Kickboxing/Martial Arts moves and routines that each student had in their locker.I was given the results of the grading along with the feedback the following week by PKA Principal Mr Mike Haig. James Turner and Declan Prendergast received fantastic feedback from Mr Haig on all aspects of their grading and had no hesitation in awarding them their Black belt 2nd Dan. We then discussed Jenny Enderby’s grading; having coached her for the last few years I was confidant she had done more than enough to pass. Mr Haig had no reservations on awarding Jenny her Black belt 1st Dan. The comments that Jenny received from Mr Haig quite simply blew me away. He said Jenny was one of the best female martial artists he had ever seen and most certainly the best in the last 25 years. High praise indeed by anyone’s standards, even more impressive when you understand who Mr Haig is in the world of Martial Arts. In the late 1960’s Mr Haig had over 300 students training per week at his Temple gym and it quickly established itself as the number one Karate school in the UK and has promoted the largest open Karate tournament ever in Britain with over 1200 competitors. In 1973 Mr Haig created the British Kung Fu Association which quickly became the largest martial arts association the country. During this period Mr Haig introduced American Kickboxing to the UK, he is the principle of the PKA which is the largest kickboxing association in the UK. He is also responsible for introducing protective equipment and matted boxing ring for martial arts things we just take for granted nowadays, along with bringing through numerous World, European and British Champions.

Midlands Kickboxing Student tackles the Great Wall of China.

Midlands Kickboxing student Sharron Clay has recently returned from Northern China, after completing a gruelling 300 mile hike along The Great Wall Of China. Here is Sharron’s take on the events.“I trekked the Great Wall of China in October this year to raise funds for the NSPCC & British Heart Foundation The wall stretches 6000km in a dotted line across China. Parts of the Great Wall were first built by princes and overlords in the Seventh Century BC as regional border defences when China was divided into many small states. As it snakes across the mountains it conjures up a sense of history which is difficult to grasp until you have had the opportunity to experience it. My trek took me through a varied terrain. I passed through woodland and terraced farmland, and followed the contours of the beautiful hills and mountains in remote areas north of Beijing. I followed old sections of the Great Wall, as well as restored sections with smooth flagstones and lots and lots of steps!!! This challenge was extremely physically demanding because of the terrain and lack of accurate maps, it’s impossible to give accurate daily distances, but it is estimated that we walked around 300 miles in 11 days, trekking for 9 - 10 hours a day. To put that in context our guide says it was the equivalent to climbing up and down Mt Snowdon two and half times a day. Due to my knee injury before the trek, I was not a fit as I had hoped to be. But even with my kickboxing training, nothing could have prepared me for this amazing challenge. It was an extremely tough experience, in which stubbornness was the only thing to get me through, but that was what made it so worthwhile and memorable. In total I raised a total of £6159. This was achieved doing various activitiessuch as car boot sales, supermarket collections, murder mystery, Halloween party, raffles, cake sales and sponsorship for this amazing adventure.”Everyone connected with Midlands Kickboxing from the staff through to the students would like to say a big congratulations to Sharron for her fantastic efforts.
